Prang (Louis) is born in Breslau, Poland.

March 12, 1824

The son of a printer, Louis Prang serves as an apprentice to his father, emigrates to in Boston in 1850, and lives at 45 Centre Street. He establishes a publishing house in 1856 and his own lithographic company in 1858.* After returning to Europe to study the latest in printing practices, Prang returns to Boston to introduce chromolithography, the process of reproducing oil paintings on cards and stationary, begins printing art books, and introduces the first Christmas card in the U.S. in 1875.* Prang’s company merges with another to become the Prang-Taber Company and moves to Springfield in 1897. Prang retires in 1899, and dies in Los Angeles, on June 14, 1909.
